    What People Are Saying

Recipient of the 2023/24 Woodland Opera House Chesley Award for

"Best Vocal Performance in a Supporting Role"

As Joe Boyd in Damn Yankees

It was both a personal and professional pleasure working with Nathan.  On this shoot, the narration and acting requirements were considerable.  Asked to narrate legalese as well as technical information, while  moving through a dynamic working office environment, he projected trust  and an exceptional understanding of the material that was perfectly  conveyed to the camera. Nathan’s preparation was so complete that, on a  few occasions, I knew we had shot exactly what was required on the first  take. Moreover, when asked to make slight changes to the narration or  performance he responded with a precision that perfectly reflected the  small amounts or direction I’d given him. But, perhaps, most  importantly…the client was exceptionally pleased, even delighted, with  Nathan’s contribution to their first venture in using a video for  marketing purposes.

My MVP is unique in this case. He wasn’t on long, but used it to the fullest. I was immediately blown away by Nathan Lacy, who played Joe Boyd, in his singing of “Goodbye Old Girl,” but he had already shown great presence in the opening number and scene. His interactions with Applegate were likewise enjoyable. As Jerry tells George in Seinfeld, “When you hit that high note, say goodbye and walk off,” and that’s exactly how I felt during this show. I literally looked at the program during Intermission hoping we’d get some more Joe Boyd, but to very limited avail. Excellent work.

But the standout performance was by Nathan Lacy, as Julian Marsh, the famous but acerbic director, who eventually sees the talent Peggy has and pushes her to the limits to step into the starring role after Dorothy has an accident. He gives her a pep talk when she gets nervous: “Two hundred people, two hundred jobs, two hundred thousand dollars, five weeks of grind and blood and sweat depend upon you. It’s the lives of all these people who’ve worked with you. You’ve got to go on, and you’ve got to give and give and give.”  Surely that’s enough to calm her down! “You’re going out a youngster but you’ve got to come back a star!”  When Lacy sings his signature song, “42nd Street,” it’s a show-stopping moment. The voice that was so memorable in the recent “Man of La Mancha” blew everyone away.

Lacy is one of those actors who has but to utter a couple of notes of his first song to let the audience know that this is something special. His spare frame, accentuated by false bushy eyelashes and scrawny beard, give the perfect visual matching Picasso’s famous silhouette. Any solo he sings is wonderful, including the most famous song from this musical, “The Impossible Dream.”
